Though Calgary is most known for being the gateway city to the Rocky Mountains, there are other day trips from the Calgary area that are worth investigating should you find yourself touring around this city:
Drumheller
- Drumheller is the main town in ‘dinosaur valley’. There are numerous things to do here including but not limited to the Royal Tyrrell Museum, the Hoodoos (sandstone pillars) and the annual Badlands Passion Play (a theatrical bio of Christ). Drumheller is about 110km northeast of Calgary.
Dinosaur Provincial Park
- For an extra 176km you can visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to “the world’s richest deposit of dinosaur bones!” (Quoted from: http://www.albertaparks.ca/dinosaur.aspx; Retrieved July 12, 2013.)
Head-Smashed-in-Buffalo-Jump
- Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this archaeological site is a bit of a drive from Calgary (about 2.5 hours). It chronicles the hunting technique of the Plains people.
