Travel Tidbits – You say goodbye and I say hello

Apparently the word aloha is used to say hello or goodbye. Roughly translated this Hawaiian word means love or affection. In English the typical greeting upon meeting someone is simply hello. Here are some other greetings whose translation goes deeper than merely acknowledging a stranger.

  • New Zealand Kia ora, “Be well/healthy.”
  • Cook Islands Kia orana, “May you live long.”
  • India Namaste, “The spirit in me salutes the spirit in you.”
  • The Arab world Salam aleyikum, “May peace be upon you.”
