Following a mostly vegan diet most of the time, especially when I travel, requires much preparation and planning to ensure well-balanced meals. Whether or not you follow a meatless diet, eating healthy while on the road can be a challenge. Here are a few ways to have control over nutrition when you travel.
- Prepare snacks for the ride.
Road trips don’t always offer the option of healthy fresh food. Before you head out, buy some healthy snacks such as organic nuts and fruit to bring along with you. Bananas and apples are ideal for their portability and availability. - Order a special meal when flying.
Airlines often offer special meals such as Kosher, diabetic, vegetarian, vegan, low-sodium, Hindu, Muslim and gluten-free. These need to be pre-ordered: when you book and confirm your flight is an ideal time to make the request. Consult with each airline’s website or ask your travel agent for options available.
- Research destination and prepare supplements accordingly.
Healthy food choices in other countries may be hard to come by. Bring along some energy/protein bars, whole food supplements and multivitamin tablets to ensure you get sufficient nutrients.
