June 18 marks the start of Ramadan for 2015. It is a month-long fast that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During this time, healthy adults fast from sun up to sun down (the elderly, sick and children are exempt) and break the fast in the evening with the Iftar meal and again in the morning with the Suhoor meal.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Besides refraining from food, one must also refrain from bad thoughts and words. Religious observance and acts of charity and compassion are also part of the spirit of Ramadan.
